The renovation of an original Valencian bar into a family home
Located in the old seaside neighbourhood of Nazaret, which lost its connection to the sea years ago, the house still retains the spirit of the time when it was connected to the sea. Spacious courtyards, large terraces, and openings on two sides to let in the sea breeze. But before being a home, it housed a bar inside.
The original position of the bar has been preserved, transforming it – from a public to a private space – into a family kitchen island.
The original structure of internal divisions is also preserved. The pre-existing bays divide the day area by means of two porticoes which, using a friendly scale, configure the main space. A continuous line runs along the ground floor, unifying views and emphasising the horizontality of the open space.
The house is distributed over two floors. On the ground floor, a single space composes all the rooms of the day area, integrating the kitchen, living room, dining room, study and terrace.
In this day area, the fireplace rests on a planked natural wood base that coincides with the first step of the staircase leading to the night area.
The kitchen is integrated following the rhythm of the porticoes and generating a large lamp that invites participation around the island, cooking, chatting, and reconverting it into a space for public use as it was.

At the back, an open courtyard facing northeast reflects the typical structure of the dwellings in the area, cooling the interior through cross ventilation.
On the first level, there are three bedrooms, a bathroom, and a large terrace overlooking a garden, and in the background, the port’s cranes cast a horizon full of lights at night.
In the search for constructive truthfulness in the materials, the exposed ceramic tile in the party walls provides insulation. It integrates with neutral tones and organic elements to generate a welcoming space. The flooring of the house, of continuous light concrete, unifies the wooden fronts and the exposed brick.
